The Beverly Hillbillies
"Paul Henning, who had been one of the main writers on the Bolger Show, had been turning out weekly episodes of sit-coms for years. He had an amazing ability to get a germ of an idea in his head, and virtually, overnight, produce a complete script. As far as I know, he did all his own writing. That goes for the Cummings shows, Bolger, and of course, The Beverly Hillbillies. When he hired me to play "Aunt Phyllis" the first time, he had the script written but didn't have a clue what he was going to do the following week. After two days of shooting (we did one camera on that show) that particular week, Paul decided he liked the way "Phyllis" was playing out, so he asked me if I were available the following week for another episode of "Phyllis." He went home and wrote the script that night and that second episode was born. What a fertile brain he had! He was also an angel of a human being..."
